Red Deer Alta July 31st 1910 Dear Professor Osborn: We came here last Thursday spent all of Friday in preliminaries and getting lumber out at the mill. Saturday started to build the boats and will probably complete them Monday or Tuesday, a 12 X 30 foot flatboat and a row boat. The river is rather low at present and I am promised trouble ahead in getting over the bars and rapids. I should have avoided rough water by building at Content sixty miles down the river as I had planned but could not get the lumber and supplies necessary down there. The river men tell me of fossils near Content which if true will give a much larger fossil field in the Edmonton series than I anticipated . That would mean fossil outcrops for a distance of at least 100 miles. Will write you again from Content. This is a beautiful country spruce and poplar over all the hills and valleys and good crops everywhere, a strong contrast to the drought stricken country to the south. The outfit has probably arrived at Calgary by this time but I have not yet heard from Davenport. We find it quite cold here especially at night when heavy coats are not uncomfortable. Write me for the present at Fox Conlie, Alta Sincerely Yours Barnum Brown |
