“The original assignment was to accurately reconstruct the heads of the embolotheres E. andrewsi and E. grangeri, emphasizing their unusual and extremely bizarre nasal cavities. I found it helpful to sculpt the heads first, to better understand their form and function. I set up a studio in the attic of AMNH’s Southeast tower to work on brontotheres - this shot includes much of the reference material that I kept close at hand, including two brontothere model heads made by Christman.”
