Degraded Marsh

degraded marsh

When the salt marsh is inundated by spring flooding, geese dig out the underground parts of the plants for the carbohydrates they provide (termed "grubbing"). This is a destructive feeding method because it opens up plant patches to higher evaporation and erosion, it removes growing parts, and if concentrated or repeated enough, it strips vegetation completely and leaves bare mineral soils.
