Images of Degradation

an exclosure in a field of dead willows and salicornia

The images in this slide show depict damage to the Hudson and James Bay coastal tundra initiated by the growing mid-continent population of lesser snow geese. The fenced area above excludes geese and prevents destructive foraging. The area inside the fence had no geese. The area outside the fence had geese. The effect is as striking as it is obvious. To learn more on the process, see the trophic cascade section of our web site.
