Population ecology of sympatric snow geese and Canada geese on Akimiski Island.
Variation of growth in goslings is related to geographic variation in habitat quality and abundance and can influence survival rates and recruitment into the breeding population. On Akimiski Island, we have a unique opportunity to monitor changes in demographic variables and population size of sympatric nesting populations of Canada geese and lesser snow geese. Ground studies of nesting biology, gosling growth and survival and interspecific interactions will allow us to examine the relationships between an increasing population of lesser snow geese and a population of Canada geese that has recently undergone a dramatic decline in numbers.
