Dear Prof. Osborn:

We have today moved camp to the extreme western bone pits, where Beadnell did a little prospecting and where Markgraf obtained our Palaeomastodon lower jaws. We may find nothing here but I wanted to look over the western exposures to be sure we were missing no promising localities.

So far we have had very little success on our second trip in here, and we have been prospecting every day, with the two old men at work with shovels on the more promising places. Of course we have some bones, but nothing especially good. There are two or three Creodont jaws, a few jaws of (?) and Saghatherium, Arsinoitherium and Palaeomastodon and a very few vertebra limb bones etc. which the old men found in a small picket in Quarry B.

The weather is favorable but the bones are in hiding just at present. We have been in the upper layers again and have found a very few things.

Markgraf is camped near the old place at the quarries and we had two or three evenings visit with him. He has a few things from the upper bed and some fragmentary jaws of the large forms from the quarry level. He leaves the desert in a week or so for the season.

I'm very sorry that I can not report something good - the isn't much inclination to write when we are having poor success. We are pegging away, though, and may surprise ourselves before we are through here.

David is still ill - at least he hasn't turned up at Tamia yet.

There appears to be but very little bone at this end of the upper Eocene trench - except right in this one locality; I do not think that as thorough prospecting has been done here as further East. Ali says Dr. Andrews has not been here at all.

We both continue in good health. The heat is annoying but not dangerous yet. Trusting I may be able to send a better report soon I am with highest regard

Very sincerely yours

Walter Granger
