My dear Brown:

I was very glad indeed to receive your letter of June 17th, and to to learn of your pormpt arrival in Miles City and especially the valuable information you have received there. It is certainly remarkable that we should have hit right off upon one of the localities I especially desired to find, namely, the site of the skull in the Smithsonian Institution, which is in beautiful preservation and which I have always admired very much.

Judging from your report, you are in what Marsh used to call the ÒHoly groundÓ; and there is every reason to think that by careful inquiry among the natives by making friend wherever yo can, and by energetic prospecting you may find something of real value.

Keep me well informed of your progress.

I will send Lulll to inqure of Mr. Hoffman, according to your directions.

Dr. Matthew, Loomis and Thomson left on Saturday, June 21st for Boseman. I have instructed Dr. Matthew to give his chief attention to the collection of mammals, because I fear if he divides his purposes it will be to the decided disadvantage of his expedition. In case it should prove that co-operation by his party is very important, the matter would be somewhat altered, and I would consider uniting the two parties. I am inclined to think, however, that the best results will be obtained by your concentrating on the Dinosaurs and his concentrating on the mammals. I find I am sailing very close to the wind in the matter of budget, and it will be necessary for you to use as much economy and careful management of funds as you can.

We are having beautiful weather here now, and all is going well. With very best wishes for your success,

Always sincerely yours,

[Prof. Osborn] Mr. Barnum Brown
