In tribute to the heros and victims of 9/11/01

"...I believe that man will not merely endure: he will prevail..."
William Faulkner - Nobel Prize Speech -Stockholm, December 10, 1950

I have returned from a 39th year of research in the Hudson Bay Lowlands, 30 miles east of Churchill, Manitoba, Canada. Our efforts have expanded from the original study of the genetics of the blue/white color dimorphism of lesser snow geese to a more community based study of coastal tundra ecosystems. We are interested in how the various animal species occurring in the region interact with vegetation, the landscape and climate change. Study organisms range from passerines through shorebirds and migratory waterfowl through arctic foxes and polar bears. We use a variety of techniques including molecular genetics, stable isotopes and mathematical models.

I will be attending a meeting on October 1-5 in Winnipeg, Manitoba sponsored by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Canadian Wildlife Service. The goal of the meeting will be to finalize a report that evaluates the progress and future of a management program aimed at controlling the mid-continent population of lesser snow geese.
