Comment

Removed from the synonymy of Euproctus by Carranza and Amat, 2005, Zool. J. Linn. Soc., 145: 555; Calotriton was also considered by these authors to be the sister taxon of Triturus (sensu stricto). Weisrock, Papenfuss, Macey, Litvinchuk, Polymeni, Ugurtas, Zhao, Jowkar, and Larson, 2006, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 41: 855-857, concurred with this view and considered Calotriton to be the sister taxon of Triturus (as the Triturus cristatus group). See comment under Euproctus. Steinfartz, Vicario, Arntzen, and Caccone, 2007, J. Exp. Zool., 308B: 139-142, suggested on the basis of molecular evidence that Calotriton is the sister taxon of Triturus. Pyron and Wiens, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 61: 543-583, on the basis of a study of legacy DNA sequences confirmed this arrangement. Raffaëlli, 2013, Urodeles du Monde, 2nd ed.: 145–146, provided a brief account, photo, and map.
