The sister taxon of Eurycea according to the original publication. In the tribe Spelerpini of Vieites, Román, Wake, and Wake, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 59: 633. Bonett, Steffen, Lambert, Wiens, and Chippindale, 2014 "2013", Evolution, 68: 473, confirmed the phylogenetic placement of the taxon.
