Gracixalus sapaensis Matsui, Ohler, Eto, and Nguyen, 2017, Alytes, 33: 28. Holotype: MNHNP 1999. 5961, by original designation. Type locality: "Fan Si Pan (Phan Xi Păng) mountains, Hoang Lien Nature Reserve, Sa Pa District, Lao Cai Province, Vietnam (1250 m a.s.l.)". 


Known from northwestern Vietnam in Lai Chau (Phon Tho and Tam Duong), Lao Cai (Sa Pa, and Bat Xat), and Dak Lak (Chu Yang Sin)., 1250 to 2340 m elevation. 


The records of this species in Vietnam were previously predominantly assigned to Gracixalus carinensis. See account (as Philautus carinensis) by Bourret, 1942, Batr. Indochine: 468-469 . Orlov, Lathrop, Murphy, and Ho, 2001, Russ. J. Herpetol., 8: 19, listed Kurixalus carinensis as part of the Vietnam fauna.  Orlov, Murphy, Ananjeva, Ryabov, and Ho, 2002, Russ.
