Comment

Formerly part of Amolops. Considered a subgenus of Amolops by Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 321. Frost, Grant, Faivovich, Bain, Haas, Haddad, de Sá, Channing, Wilkinson, Donnellan, Raxworthy, Campbell, Blotto, Moler, Drewes, Nussbaum, Lynch, Green, and Wheeler, 2006, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 297: 139, considered Meristogenys to be the sister taxon of Clinotarsus. See comment under Clinotarsus. Cai, Che, Pang, Zhao, and Zhang, 2007, Zootaxa, 1531: 49-55, did not address Clinotarsus, but did consider Meristogenys to be imbedded phylogenetically within a paraphyletic Huia, as did Kurabayashi, Yoshikawa, Sato, Hayashi, Oumi, Fujii, and Sumida, 2010, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 56: 543-553. Shimada, Matsui, Sudin, and Mohamed, 2007, Zool. J. Linn. Soc., 151: 173-189, compared morphology and molecular markers of larvae in a single stream in Sabah, Malaysia, that suggested the morphologically cryptic species within Meristogenys whiteheadi, and that previous associations of larvae with adults in Meristogenys amoropalamus and Meristogenys kinabaluensis should be taken with caution. Pyron and Wiens, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 61: 543-583, in their study of Genbank sequences confirmed the monophyly of this taxon (although rendering Huia paraphyletic with respect to both Meristogenys and Clinotarsus), although this is difficult to appreciate given the authors' adoption of a nonmonophyletic and antiquated taxonomy.
