Distribution

Confined primarily to the Balsas Depression of southern Mexico in the states of Morelos, Guerrero, Michoacán, Morelos, Puebla, and México, but extends eastward into Oaxaca and northwestern into Jalisco and Colima.

In the Rana tarahumarae group of Hillis, Frost, and Webb, 1984, Copeia, 1984: 398–403, Rana pustulosa group of Dubois, 1987 "1986", Alytes, 5: 42, and equivalent subgenus Zweifelia of Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 331. This species had been mistakenly referred to as Rana pustulosa in most literature. See comment under Rana pustulosa. See account by Webb, 2001, Mesoam. Herpetol.: 31–35 (who noted very confusing variation in this species as related to Rana psilonota and Rana pustulosa). Chávez-Juárez, Alcaraz-Cruz, and Valenzuela Galván, 2004, Herpetol.
