Phrynobatrachus leveleve Uyeda, Drewes, and Zimkus, 2007, Proc. California Acad. Sci., Ser. 4, 58: 371. Holotype: CAS 218901, by original designation. Type locality: "SãO TOMÉ AND PRÍNCIPE: São Tomé Island, Caxueira, along Agua Pete Pete, 0°18′N, 6°44′E, elevation 50 m."

Confused with Phrynobatrachus dispar prior to its naming according to the original publication. Frétey, 2008, Alytes, 25: 99-172, summarized the literature. In species group B of Zimkus, Rödel, and Hillers, 2010, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 55: 883-900. Channing and Rödel, 2019, Field Guide Frogs & Other Amph. Afr.: 304–305, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map. Bell, Ceríaco, Scheinberg, and Drewes, 2022, in Ceríaco et al. (eds.), Biodiversity Gulf Guinea Islands: 494–495, summarized the literature and systematics of the species. Ceríaco, Marques, Sousa, Veríssimo, Beja, and Ferreira, 2023, ZooKeys, 1168: 41–75, included this species in a report, key, and DNA barcode reference library for the amphibians of São Tomé and Príncipe.
