Phrynobatrachus kakamikro Schick, Zimkus, Channing, Köhler, and Lötters, 2010, Salamandra, 46: 24. Holotype: NMKA/3924/2, by original designation. Type locality: "a temporary puddle at the border of the Kakamega Forest (00°2′ N, 34°5′ E; 1650 m a.s.l.), Western Province, Kenya".

Kakemega Forest, Western Province, Kenya, to Butare in Rwanda, 962 to 1807 m elevation.
