Phrynobatrachus inexpectatus Largen, 2001, Tropical Zool., 14: 301. Holotype: BMNH 1975.1711, by original designation. Type locality: "70 km NW of Kebre Mengist, near Bore (06° 23′ N 38° 35′ E, 2650 m), Ethiopia".

Distribution

Humid montane forests in southwestern Ethiopia west of the Rift Valley from near Dorse at 2600 m elevation) and east of the Rift Valley from near Bore (2650 m elevation) and from several nearby localities in the Harenna Forest of the Bale Mountains at 1400 to 2400 m elevation. See comment.

In the dwarf Phrynobatrachus group according to the original publication and compared with Phrynobatrachus scapularis, Phrynobatrachus albifer, Phrynobatrachus rouxi, Phrynobatrachus ukingensis, Phrynobatrachus mababiensis, Phrynobatrachus cryptotis. Frétey, 2008, Alytes, 25: 99-17, summarized the literature. In species group B of Zimkus, Rödel, and Hillers, 2010, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 55: 883-900. Tiutenko and Zinenko, 2020, Salamandra, 56: 135–147, commented on the identification with respect to Phrynobatrachus minutus and range (noting that the earlier record from Boka village, Kaffa province, Ethiopia, is based on juvenile Phrynobatrachus cf. natalensis), call, tadpole morphology, and breeding biology. Kassie Teme, Bekele Simegn, and Afework Bogale, 2022, Global Ecol. Conserv., 38 (e02211): 1–12, reported the species from Keffa Zone, southwestern Ethiopia, and discussed habitat.
