Northern and western sides of the Amazon basin: State of Bolivar (Venezuela), French Guiana, Surinam, Guyana, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Colombia.
Most closely related to Arcovomer and Chiasmocleis but more "primitive" than either according to Carvalho, 1954, Occas. Pap. Mus. Zool. Univ. Michigan, 555: 8. Pyron and Wiens, 2011, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 61: 543–583, suggested Hamptophryne to be the sister taxon of a group composed of Dermatonotus, Elachistocleis, Hypopachus, and Gastrophryne.
