Type locality: "Erima", Papua New Guinea. Blum and Menzies, 1989 "1988", Alytes, 7: 136, note that the type locality is likely not the present-day settlement on Astrolabe Bay, but a village several kilometers inland. Neotype from "lower Kaironk valley, altitude 1300 m, Madang Province of Papua New Guinea".

In the Xenobatrachus rostratus group of Blum and Menzies, 1989 "1988", Alytes, 7: 125-163, rejected by Menzies, 2006, Frogs New Guinea & Solomon Is.: 256, who provided a brief account (as Xenobatrachus rostrarus) on page 263. Shea and Kraus, 2007, Zootaxa, 1514: 37-60, commented on types.
