Mantidactylus argenteus Methuen, 1920 "1919", Proc. Zool. Soc. London, 1919: 353. Holotype: TMP 1009 by original designation (now numbered 10078 according to Blommers-Schlösser and Blanc, 1991, Faune de Madagascar, 75: 161). Guibé, 1978, Bonn. Zool. Monogr., 11: 31, regarded TMP 10078 and 10079, in error, as syntypes. Type locality: "Folohy, East Madagascar".

Prior to the revision of Glaw and Vences, 2006, Organisms Divers. Evol., 6: 242, in the Mantidactylus (Blommersia) argenteus group according to Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 311. Vejarano, Thomas, Glaw, and Vences, 2006, Afr. Zool., 41: 164–169, reported on larval morphology and advertisement call. Glaw and Vences, 2007, Field Guide Amph. Rept. Madagascar, Ed. 3: 248-249, provided an account.
