Monogr., 11: 56; MNHNP 29.209 considered holotype in error by Guibé, 1950 "1948", Cat. Types Amph. Mus. Natl. Hist. Nat.: 54; this specimen designated lectotype by Blommers-Schlösser, 1979, Beaufortia, 29: 50. Type localities: "Alaotra" and "d'Ambila (lagune); province de Tamatave", Madagascar. Restricted to "d'Ambila (lagune)" by lectotype designation.

Distribution

Known from low-altitude localities in the central portion of Madagascar’s east coast: (1) its type locality Ambila, (2) several sites on Nosy Boraha, (3) Ile aux Nattes, (4) Antetezana north of Toamasina, and (5) close to Besariaka (south of Moramanga), from near sea level to 980 m elevation.

Removed from the synonymy of Guibemantis bicalcaratus by Vences, Rakotoarison, Rakotondrazafy, Ratsoavina, Randrianiaina, Glaw, Lehtinen, and Raxworthy, 2013, Vert. Zool., Senckenberg, 63: 193-205, where it had been placed by Blommers-Schlösser, 1979, Beaufortia, 29: 50, and Glaw and Vences, 1992, Fieldguide Amph. Rept. Madagascar: 276. See comments by Lehtinen, Glaw, and Vences, 2011, Herpetol. J., 21: 109, and under Guibemantis bicalcaratus with which this was previously confused.
