Rana inguinalis Günther, 1877, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., Ser. 4, 19: 316. Holotype: BMNH, by original designation (and figured in pl. 3, fig. 3 of Boulenger, 1882, Cat. Batr. Sal. Coll. Brit. Mus., Ed. 2), this specimen being BMNH 1947.2.26.54 according to Blommers-Schlösser and Blanc, 1991, Faune de Madagascar, 75: 343. Type locality: "Anzahamaru", Madagascar.  Köhler, Glaw, Pabijan, and Vences, 2015, Zootaxa, 4006: 421, discussed the type locality and suggested that it is most likely "Anzahamaru (= Anjahamaro) . . . a locality very close to Mahanoro", south of Tamatave (= Taomasina), Madagascar.

Distribution

Known from Anzahamaru, Betampona, Ifanadiana, Manombo, Marojejy, Ranomafana village, Tampolo, and Tolagnaro, localities all located along the east coast of Madagascar at elevations from sea level up to 481 m.

Removed from the synonymy of Aglyptodactylus madagascariensis by Köhler, Glaw, Pabijan, and Vences, 2015, Zootaxa, 4006: 421 (who provided an account), where it had been placed by Boulenger, 1883, Ann. Mag. Nat. Hist., Ser. 5, 11: 17; Methuen and Hewitt, 1913, Ann. Transvaal Mus., 4: 51; Boulenger, 1918, Proc. Zool. Soc. London, 1918: 257; Ahl, 1931, Das Tierreich, 55: 35; and Guibé, 1978, Bonn. Zool. Monogr., 11: 12.
