Comment

Considered the sister taxon of Scarthyla + Scinax by Duellman and Wiens, 1992, Occas. Pap. Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kansas, 151: 1-23. See nomenclatural discussion by Myers and Leviton, 1961, Herpetologica, 17: 61-62. In Dendropsophini of Faivovich, Haddad, Garcia, Frost, Campbell, and Wheeler, 2005, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 294: 89. Araujo-Vieira, Tacioli, and Faivovich, 2015, Zootaxa, 3904: 270–282, commented on comparative larval morphology within the genus. Dewynter, Marty, Courtois, Blanc, and Fouquet, 2017, Cah. Fondation Biotope, 12: 1–16, provided an illustrated key to the species of French Guiana. Araujo-Vieira, Blotto, Caramaschi, Haddad, Faivovich, and Grant, 2019, Cladistics, 35: 469–486, provided a phylogenetic study of the group, recognizing three species groups, the Sphaenorhynchus lacteus (Sphaenorhynchus dorisae, Sphaenorhynchus lacteus), Sphaenorhynchus planicola (Sphaenorhynchus minim, Sphaenorhynchus planicola), and Sphaenorhynchus platycephalus groups (Sphaenorhynchus caramaschii, Sphaenorhynchus bromleicola, Sphaenorhynchus palustris, Sphaenorhynchus botocudo, Sphaenorhynchus canga, Sphaenorhynchus platycephalus, Sphaenorhynchus surdus), with three species unassigned to group: Sphaenorhynchus carneus, Sphaenorhynchus pauloalvini, and Sphaenorhynchus prasinus. Pereira Silva, Ceron, Silva, and Santana, 2022, Ecol. Evol., 12(e8754): 1–15, reported on phylogenetics and biogeography of the the entire genus, successfully placing Sphaenorhynchus carneus (sister of Sphaenorhynchus pauloalvini), Sphaenorhynchus pauloalvini, and Sphaenorhynchus prasinus (sister of the Sphaenorhynchus lacteus group.
