Lowlands of Mexico, Central and South America east of the Andes, south to northern Argentina and eastern Brazil.

Smith, Arif, Nieto-Montes de Oca, and Wiens, 2007, Evolution, 61: 2075-2085, and Moen and Wiens, 2009, Evolution, 63: 195-214, recognized the nonmonophyletic Phrynohyas with no comment.
