In the Hyla albopunctata group according to the original publication. Very similar to Hyla armata according to De la Riva, Köhler, Lötters, and Reichle, 2000, Rev. Esp. Herpetol., 14: 32. In the Hyloscirtus armatus group of Faivovich, Haddad, Garcia, Frost, Campbell, and Wheeler, 2005, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 294: 84. Lötters, Reichle, Faivovich, and Bain, 2005, Stud. Neotrop. Fauna Environ., 40: 182, provided the Bautista Savedra record and described the tadpole.
