Minervarya brevipalmata (Peters, 1871)

Class: Amphibia > Order: Anura > Family: Dicroglossidae > Subfamily: Dicroglossinae > Genus: Minervarya > Species: Minervarya brevipalmata

Rana brevipalmata Peters, 1871, Monatsber. Preuss. Akad. Wiss. Berlin, 1871: 646. Holotype: ZMB 6130 according to Bauer, Günther, and Klipfel, 1995, in Bauer et al. (eds.), Herpetol. Contr. W.C.H. Peters: 50, who could not locate the specimen in 1994, although Garg and Biju, 2021, Asian Herpetol. Res., 12: 353 noted its existence in 2021. Type locality: "Pegú", Myanmar; this locality doubted by Boulenger, 1905 "1904", Spolia Zeylan., 2: 73-74, and  Garg and Biju, 2021, Asian Herpetol. Res., 12: 353, the latter of which suggested that the type locality is in the Western Ghats of southern India.

Comment

Boulenger, 1905 "1904", Spolia Zeylan., 2: 73-74; Boulenger, 1920, Rec. Indian Mus., 20: 37, reported this species from southern India. Roux, 1928, Rev. Suisse Zool., 38: 460, considered this a subspecies of Rana limnocharis under the incorrect subsequent spelling Rana limnocharis parvipalmata. Boulenger, 1905 "1904", Spolia Zeylan., 2: 73-74, and Boulenger, 1920, Rec. Indian Mus., 20: 118, doubted the stated type locality of Peters, 1871. Bourret, 1942, Batr. Indochine: 250, following Boulenger, 1890, considered Rana brevipalmata to be a junior synonym of Limnonectes limnocharis (as Rana limnocharis). Dubois, 1984, Alytes, 3: 153, considered this name to likely be a junior synonym of Rana nilagirica Jerdon, 1853. Considered incertae sedis within Fejervarya by Dubois, 1987 "1986", Alytes, 5: 61; without discussion. Not associated with a biological species of frogs according to Dubois and Ohler, 2000, Alytes, 18: 35, Pillai, 1980, Bull. Zool. Surv. India, 3: 31-33, presented characters to distinguish this species from Rana limnocharis nilagirica. Chanda, 2002, Handb. Indian Amph.: 93-94, provided a brief account (as Rana brevipalmata). Dutta, 1997, Amph. India Sri Lanka: 126-127, provided range, systematic comments, and a taxonomic bibliography. Daniels, 2005, Amph. Peninsular India: 201-203, provided an account (as Limnonectes brevipalmata). Das and Dutta, 2007, Hamadryad, 31: 154–181, summarized larval description literature (as Limnonectes brevipalmatus). Kotaki, Kurabayashi, Matsui, Khonsue, Tjong, Tandon, and Sumida, 2008, Zool. Sci., Tokyo, 25: 381-390, considered this species to be in their Fejervarya syhadrensis group. Subramanian, Dinesh, and Radhakrishnan, 2013, Atlas of Endemic Amph. W. Ghats: 44, provided a very brief characterization (as Fejervarya brevipalmata) and dot map. Sivaprasad, 2013, Common Amph. Kerala: 46–47, provided a brief account, photograph, and dot map for Kerala. Sreekumar and Dinesh, 2020, Rec. Zool. Surv. India, 120: 33–40, noted that records from Maharashtra, India, are in error. Patel and Vyas, 2020, J. Anim. Diversity, 2: 11–15, suggested that records from Gujarat, India, require confirmation. Garg and Biju, 2021, Asian Herpetol. Res., 12: 345–370, summarized the systematics of this member of the Minervarya mysorensis group and mapped its distribution.
