Trav., Inst. R. Sci. Nat. Belg., 59: 7. Type locality: "Kankunde, Parc National de lUpemba, Belgian Congo [= Dem. Rep. Congo], . . . at an elevation of 1,300 m."

Considered to be in the Bufo taitanus complex by Tandy and Keith, 1972, in Blair (ed.), Evol. Genus Bufo: 156; without discussion. Channing, 2001, Amph. Cent. S. Afr.: 86, provided an account (as Bufo melanopleura). Marques, Ceríaco, Blackburn, and Bauer, 2018, Proc. California Acad. Sci., Ser. 4, 65 (Suppl.
