Nac., Rio de Janeiro, N.S., Zool., 500: 1-5, who considered it a species distinct from Melanophryniscus stelzneri and in the Melanophryniscus stelzneri group. See photograph, map, description of geographic range and habitat, and conservation status in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 195. Kwet, Maneyro, Zillikens, and Mebs, 2005, Salamandra, 41: 1–8, reported on the call. Zank, Becker, Abadie, Baldo, and Maneyro, 2014, PLoS One, E 9(4: e94625): 1–11, provided modeled distribution maps for the species under climate change. Moser, Farina, Borges-Martins, Machado, Colombo, and Tozetti, 2021, Neotrop. Biol. Conserv., 16: 443, noted that earlier records of Melanophryniscus atroluteus from the municipality of São Leopoldo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, actually apply to this species. Freire, Regnet, Machado, Loebmann, and Verrastro, 2022, Zootaxa, 5129: 442–446, reported on larval morphology.
