Atelopus sonsonensis Vélez-Rodriguez and Ruiz-Carranza, 1997, Rev. Acad. Colomb. Cienc. Exact. Fis. Nat., 21: 556. Holotype: ICN 37516, by original designation. Type locality: "COLOMBIA, Antioquia, municipio de Sonsón, vereda Caunzal, flanco oriental de la Cordillera Central, ca. 15 km al sureste del municipio Argelia, 1500 m."

Distribution

Known only from the type locality (Municipio de Sonsón,  southern Antioquia) and the Municipio de Pensilvania, Parque Nacional Natural Selva de Florencia, Departamento Caldas, Colombia on the eastern slope of the Cordillera Central, Colombia, 1500–2150 m elevation.

(eds.), Ranas Arlequines: 111, provided a brief account, photograph, and map. Velásquez-Trujillo, Castro-Herrera, Lötters, and Plewnia, 2024, Salamandra, 60: 67–81, discussed the Caldas population of this species, its comparative morphology, and provisionally assigned that population to this species.
