Leptopelis mtoewaate Portillo and Greenbaum, 2014, J. Herpetol., 48: 396. Holotype: UTEP 20566, by original designation. Type locality: "Kalundu, South Kivu Province, DRC, 3.155528S, 28.421088E (datum, WGS84), elevation 1,482 m". 

English Names

Kabembe Treefrog (original publication). 


Currently known only from the Itombwe Plateau (1451 to 1837 m elevation) in the eastern part of the Dem. Rep. Congo and one locality on the western shore of Lake Tanganyika at Baraka (777 m elevation). 


In the Leptopelis modestus complex, together with a currently unnamed species, the sister taxon of Leptopelis modestus sensu stricto, according to the original publication. Portillo, Greenbaum, Menegon, Kusamba, and Dehling, 2015, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 82: 75–86, discussed the phylogeography and species boundaries of the species.
