Pachytriton xanthospilos Wu, Wang, and Hanken, 2012, Zootaxa, 3388: 8. Holotype: CIB 97902, by original designation. Type locality: "Mangshan National Forest Park, Mt. Mang, 24.93° N 112.97° E, elevation 1375 m, near the border between Hunan and Guangdong provinces, P. R. China".

Distribution

Known from montane northeastern Guangxi (Guoshan) and and northern Guangdong (Shaoguan), China, 800 to 1400 m elevation.

 Wu and Murphy, 2015, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 92: 108–117, reported on the phylogenetics, range, and status of the members of the Pachytriton brevipes group, and removed Pachytriton xanthospilos from the synonymy of Pachytriton changi, where it had been placed by implication of Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2012, Colored Atlas Chinese Amph. Distr.: 104, and more formally by Nishikawa, Matsui, Wang, Yoshikawa, and Jiang, 2013, Curr. Herpetol., Kyoto, 32: 150. The sister taxon of Pachytriton feii + Pachytriton brevipes according to the original publication according to Wu, Wang, and Hanken, 2012, Zootaxa, 3388: 8. Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2012, Colored Atlas Chinese Amph. Distr.: 100–101, provided an account, photographs, and a map of the range (as Pachytriton changi). Raffaëlli, 2013, Urodeles du Monde, 2nd ed.: 169–170, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map. Fei and Ye, 2016, Amph.
