Type locality: "near Galeana, N[uevo]. L[eón]., [Mexico,] 7,000 ft. elevation"; rendered as 15 mi. west of Galeana, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, by Cochran, 1961, Bull. U.S. Natl. Mus., 220: 9. Incorrect original spelling as evidenced by comparison with type locality name Galeana.

In the Pseudoeurycea cephalica group of Wake and Lynch, 1976, Sci. Bull. Nat. Hist. Mus. Los Angeles Co., 25: 61. Taylor, 1944, Univ. Kansas Sci. Bull., 30: 189-232, made the justified emendation of the spelling of the species name. See account by Liner, 1998, Cat. Am. Amph. Rept., 643: 1-3. Liner, Johnson, and Chaney, 1976, Herpetol. Rev., 7: 177, provided specific localities for this species and commented on the range. Lemos-Espinal and Smith, 2007, Anf. Rept. Coahuila México: 30, provided an account for Coahuila, Mexico. Raffaëlli, 2013, Urodeles du Monde, 2nd ed.: 284, provided a brief account, photograph, and map. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 637, provided an account, summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
