Hynobius fossigenus Okamiya, Sugawara, Nagano, and Poyarkov, 2018, PeerJ, 5084: 15. Holotype: ZMMU A-5862, by original designation. Type loality: "small stream on the eastern slope of Hinode-san (= Mt. Hinode), in the vicinity of Hinode City, Tokyo, Honshu Island, Japan (N 35.78°; E 139.17°; elevation 679 m a.s.l.)".

Distribution

Gunma, Saitama, Tokyo and Kanagawa Prefectures of Kanto District, and from Yamanashi, Shizuoka, Nagano and the northeastern part of Aichi Prefecture in Chubu District of central Honshu, Japan.

A member of the Hynobius kimurae–Hynobius boulengeri species complex and the sister species of Hynobius kimurae according to the original publication. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 129, provided an account, summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
