Hynobius amakusaensis Nishikawa and Matsui, 2014, Zootaxa, 3852: 219. Holotype: KUHE 42772, by original designation. Type locality: "Amakusa-shi, Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan (alt. 430 m a.s.l.)".

Distribution

Known only from two sites (elevations of 410 and 430 m) on the Kamishima Island of the Amakusa Islands, off of Kyushu, Japan.

According to the original publication, previously confused with Hynobius boulengeri and forming the sister taxon of Hynobius stejnegeri. Raffaëlli, 2022, Salamanders & Newts of the World: 127, provided an account, summarizing systematics, life history, population status, and distribution (including a polygon map).
