Distribution

Southern and southwestern Hainan Island, China, 200–900 m elevation; one record assigned to this species from western Guangxi on the Vietnam border; likely adjacent Vietnam.

Comment

Confused with Rana andersonii previous to its description. Ye and Fei, 2001, Acta Zool. Sinica, 47: 528–534, suggested that this is the sister species of Odorrana margaretae plus Odorrana andersonii plus Odorrana hainanensis and placed it in their Odorrana andersonii group. In the Odorrana (Odorrana) andersonii group of Fei, Ye, Huang, Jiang, and Xie, 2005, in Fei et al. (eds.), Illust. Key Chinese Amph.: 126. See photograph, map, description of geographic range and habitat, and conservation status (as Rana hainanensis) in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 504. Fei, Hu, Ye, and Huang, 2009, Fauna Sinica, Amph. 3: 1252–1256, provided an account, figures, and map for China, placed it in their Odorrana andersonii group. Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2010, Colored Atlas of Chinese Amph.: 330–331, provided a brief account including photographs. Shi, 2011, Amph. Rept. Fauna Hainan: 100–102, provided an account as Rana andersonii. Fei, Ye, and Jiang, 2012, Colored Atlas Chinese Amph. Distr.: 372–373, provided an account, photographs, and a range map that included a spot on the Vietnam border in western Guizhou.
