Comment

With the naming of Clinotarsus penelope, based on larval characters, the literature of Clinotarsus alticola from Thailand must be presumed to apply to the newer species.  See account by Taylor, 1962, Univ. Kansas Sci. Bull., 43: 453-456 (as Rana alticola).  Chan-ard, 2003, Photograph. Guide Amph. Thailand: 140-141, provided a very brief account, map for Thailand, and photograph, as Rana cf. alticola. See identification table by Manthey and Grossmann, 1997, Amph. Rept. Südostasiens: 84-86, to compare this species to other ranids of the Sunda Shelf region, although this species was conflated with Clinotarsus alticola. In the original publication, the authors provided molecular evidence that possibly one more species of Clinotarsus will be named from the Tak-Kanchanaburi Province boundary area of Thailand. Chan-ard, Cota, and Makchai, 2011, Amph. E. Region Thailand: 142, detailed the range (as Clinotarsus alticola) in Thailand. Mulcahy, Lee, Miller, Chand, Thura, and Zug, 2018, ZooKeys, 757: 95, provided a record (as Clinotarsus alticola) from Taninthary Division, southern Myanmar. Zug, Mulcahy, Vindum, and Wilkinson, 2018, Alytes, 36: 270, provided a record for South Tanintharyi, peninsular Myanmar. Zug and Mulcahy, 2020 "2019", Amph. Rept. S. Tanintharyi: 54, provided a brief account for South Tanintharyi, peninsular Myanmar. Zug, 2022, Smithson. Contrib. Zool., 653: 36, briefly discussed identification, habitat, and range in Myanmar.
