Comment

Schiøtz, 1963, Vidensk. Medd. Dansk Naturhist. Foren., 125: 36–38, provided records for Nigeria. Frétey, 2008, Alytes, 25: 99–172, summarized the literature. See comment under Phrynobatrachus manengoubensis, which may be a synonym, or Phrynobatrachus werneri may constitute more than one species according to Zimkus, 2009, Zool. J. Linn. Soc., 157: 796–813 (referring to what was subsequently named as Phrynobatrachus schioetzi). In species group C of Zimkus, Rödel, and Hillers, 2010, Mol. Phylogenet. Evol., 55: 883–900, whose analysis suggested that nominal Phrynobatrachus werneri is a species complex forming a paraphyletic series with respect to Phrynobatrachus manengoubensis. Blackburn and Rödel, 2011, Herpetologica, 67: 282, discussed the realignment of range (excluding Nigeria) with the description of Phrynobatrachus schioetziChanning and Rödel, 2019, Field Guide Frogs & Other Amph. Afr.: 282–283, provided a brief account, photograph, and range map. In the Phrynobatrachus natalensis group of Goutte, Reyes-Velasco, and Boissinot, 2019, ZooKeys, 824: 53–70. In the Phrynobatracus werneri group according to Gvoždík, Nečas, Dolinay, Zimkus, Schmitz, and Fokam, 2020, PeerJ, 8 (e8393): 1–52.
