Distribution

Submontane forests and streams in the West Usambara and Magrotto mountains, northeastern Tanzania, 770–1500 m elevation.

Prior to 2020 this species included the cryptic segregate Phrynobatrachus ambanguluensis; literature prior to that date should be used with caution. Reviewed by Barbour and Loveridge, 1928, Mem. Mus.
