Comment

Confused with Microhyla ornata prior to its naming according to the original publication. Heyer, 1971, Fieldiana, Zool., 58: 61–82, reported on the call (as Microhyla ornata) from Thailand (assigned to this species based on geography–DRF). Yuan, Suwannapoom, Yan, Poyarkov, Nguyen, Chen, Chomdej, Murphy, and Che, 2016, Curr. Zool., Chengdu, 62: 531–543, on the basis of molecular analysis, provided a discussion of Pleistocene climatic fluctuations on how they shaped the genetic structure of the Microhyla fissipes complex (Microhyla mukhlesuri and Microhyla fissipes); this study documented that Microhyla mukhlesuri includes all populations formerly assigned to Microhyla fissipes south and west of the Red River Valley of Yunnan, China, and Vietnam. See comment under Microhyla fissipes for literature that presumably applies at least in part to this species. Recorded for Thailand (as Microhyla ornata) by Khonsue and Thirakhupt, 2001, Nat. Hist. J. Chulalongkorn Univ., 1: 80.  Stuart, 1999, in Duckworth et al. (eds.), Wildlife in Lao PDR: 50, commented on the range in Laos (as Microhyla ornata). Chan-ard, 2003, Photograph. Guide Amph. Thailand: 104–105, provided a very brief account (as Microhyla ornata), map for Thailand, and photograph. Nguyen, Ho, and Nguyen, 2005, Checklist Amph. Rept. Vietnam: 45, provided specific localities (as Microhyla ornata) for Vietnam. Karsen, Lau, and Bogadek, 1986, Hong Kong Amph. Rept.: 37, provided a very brief account, as Microhyla ornata. Reported for southwestern Cambodia (as Microhyla ornata) by Ohler, Swan, and Daltry, 2002, Raffles Bull. Zool., 50: 465–481. Lim, Yeo, and Chan, 2006, Herpetol. Rev., 37: 101, provided the Singapore record (as Microhyla fissipes). Stuart, 2005, Herpetol. Rev., 36: 476, provided specific localities (as Microhyla fisspes) for Laos. Sumarli, Grismer, Anuar, Muin, and Quah, 2015, Check List, 11(4, Art. 1679): 10, reported specimens (as Microhyla fissipes) from Lata Belatan, Terregganu, West Malaysia, and briefly reported on their morphology and habitat. See account, photograph, and map for Vietnam in Vassilieva, Galoyan, Poyarkov, and Geissler, 2016, Photograph. Field Guide Amph. Rept. Lowland S. Vietnam: 74–77 (as Microhyla fissipes). Pham, An, Herbst, Bonkowski, Ziegler, and Nguyen, 2017, Bonn Zool. Bull., 66: 37–53, provided records (as Microhyla fissipes) for Cao Bang Province, Vietnam, along with observations on morphology and natural history. Other literature of nominal Microhyla fissipes that likely applies to this species follows:  Berry, 1975, Amph. Fauna Peninsular Malaysia: 123–124 (as Microhyla fissipes); Yang, 1991, Amph. Fauna of Yunnan: 243–245 (presumably also including Microhyla fissipes); Zhao and Yang, 1997, Amph. Rept. Hengduan Mountains Region: 139–140 (as Microhyla fissipes). Ye, Fei, and Hu, 1993, Rare and Economic Amph. China: 344 (presumably also including Microhyla fissipes); Fei, 1999, Atlas Amph. China: 294–295 (presumably also including Microhyla fissipes). For other literature possibly applying to this species look at the comments under Microhyla fissipes. Hendrix, Gawor, Vences, and Ziegler, 2008, Zootaxa, 1675: 67–68, described larvae (of nominal Microhyla fissipes) from Vietnam, presumably of this species. Garg, Das, Kamei, and Biju, 2018, MtDNA, Part B, 3: 856–861, discussed the molecular phylogenetics of the Microhyla ornata group (finding this species to be the sister of Microhyla mymensinghensis) and refined understanding of the range of this and related species. Garg, Das, Kamei, and Biju, 2018, MtDNA, Part B, 3: 856–861, addressed the Microhyla ornata complex via DNA barcodes, and provided generalized range maps. In the Microhyla fissipes species group of Garg, Suyesh, Das, Jiang, Wijayathilaka, Amarasinghe, Alhadi, Vineeth, Aravind, Senevirathne, Meegaskumbura, and Biju, 2018 "2019", Vert. Zool., Senckenberg, 69: 1–71. Niyomwan, Srisom, and Pawangkhanant, 2019, Field Guide Amph. Thailand: 230–231, provided a brief account (photographs, habitat, and range) for Thailand (in Thai). Zug and Mulcahy, 2020 "2019", Amph. Rept. S. Tanintharyi: 46–47, provided a brief account (as Microhyla fissipes) for South Tanintharyi, peninsular Myanmar. Gorin, Solovyeva, Hasan, Okamiya, Karunarathna, Pawangkhanant, de Silva, Juthong, Milto, Nguyen, Suwannapoom, Haas, Bickford, Das, and Poyarkov, 2020, PeerJ, 8 (e9411): 1–47, placed this species in their Microhyla fissipes group. Le, Nguyen, Pham, Nguyen, Phan, Dang, and Ziegler, 2021, Herpetol. Notes, 14: 317–324, reported the species from Quang Nam Province, central Vietnam, and described its morphology and coloration. Decemson, Gouda, Lalbiakzuala, Lalmuansanga, Hmar, Mathipi, and Lalremsanga, 2021, J. Threatened Taxa, 13: 17918–17929, provided the record for Dampa Tiger Reserve, Mizoram, India. Hong, Anuar, Grismer, and Quah, 2021, Check List, 17: 796, reported the species from Batu Hampar Recreational Forest, Kedah, West Malaysia. Pratihar and Deuti, 2021, J. Threatened Taxa, 13: 19818–19823, provided a record for West Bengal, India, and provided morphological characters to identify this species from Microhyla mymensinghensis. Zug, 2022, Smithson. Contrib. Zool., 653: 32, briefly discussed identification, habitat, and range in Myanmar. Ziegler, Ong, Hoang, Pham, and Nguyen, 2022, Acad. J. Biol., 44: 114, referred their earlier record of Microhyla minor (Ziegler, 2002, Amph. Rept. Tieflandfeuchtwald–Schutzgebietes Vietnam: 1–342) from Ke Go Nature Reserve, Ha Tinh Province, Vietnam, to Microhyla mukhlesuriFigueroa, Low, and Lim, 2023, Zootaxa, 5287: 1–378, provided (as Microhyla cf. mukhlesuri) records, literature, and conservation status for this species introduced to Singapore.
