Gephyromantis tricinctus Guibé, 1947, Bull. Mus. Natl. Hist. Nat. Paris, Ser. 2, 19: 154. Syntypes: MNHNP 1931.26–27 (6 specimens) by original designation. Glaw and Vences, 1999, J. Herpetol., 33: 639–647, discussed data issues with the original types and noted the types series to contain 6 specimens in two original lots, MNHNP 1931.26, 1931.26A (relabelled MNHNP 1994.611), and MNHNP 1931.26B (relabelled MNHNP 1994.612) from Befotaka, and MNHNP MNHNP 1931.27 + MNHNP 1931.27A (relabelled MNHNP 1994.613) and MNHNP 1931.27B (relabelled MNHNP 1994.614) from Vondrozo; MNHNP 1931.26 designated lectotype by Blommers-Schlösser and Blanc, 1991, Faune de Madagascar, 75: 247. Type locality: "Befotaka (Madagascar)", presumably the one 40 km S Midongy du Sud, Midongy du Sud subprefecture, Madagascar, and "Vondrozo (Madagascar)", 22° 49′ S, 47° 20′ E, 700 m elevation. Restricted to "Befotaka", Madagascar by lectotype designation.

Distribution

South East Madagascar; known from Ambahavala, Midongy du Sud/Befotaka-Midongy National Park, and Manombo. Elevation range: 30–900 m.

Removed from the synonymy of Mantidactylus biporus by Glaw and Vences, 1999, J. Herpetol., 33: 639–647 (who provided an account), where it had been placed by Blommers-Schlösser and Blanc, 1991, Faune de Madagascar, 75: 247. Glaw and Vences, 2007, Field Guide Amph. Rept. Madagascar, Ed. 3: 240–241, provided an account and who noted a similar unnamed species from An'Ala. In the subgenus Brygoomantis, Mantidactylus tricinctus clade of Scherz, Crottini, Hutter, Hildenbrand, Andreone, Fulgence, Köhler, Ndriantsoa, Ohler, Preick, Rakotoarison, Rancilhac, Raselimanana, Riemann, Rödel, Rosa, Streicher, Vieites, Köhler, Hofreiter, Glaw, and Vences, 2022, Megataxa, 7: 113–311, who provided an account detailing (pp. 253–254) molecular and morphological diagnosis, natural history, advertisement call, adult morphology, and distribution.
