Comment

Prior to the revision of Glaw and Vences, 2006, Organisms Divers. Evol., 6: 236-253, in the Mantidactylus (Gephyromantis) granulatus group of Dubois, 1992, Bull. Mens. Soc. Linn. Lyon, 61: 312. Subsequently, Vences and Glaw, 2001, Alytes, 19: 127-129, provided an account and placed this species in their Mantidactylus asper group. Glaw and Vences, 2007, Field Guide Amph. Rept. Madagascar, Ed. 3: 222-223, provided an account. See statement of geographic range, habitat, and conservation status (as Mantidactylus plicifer) in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 624. Randrianiaina, Wollenberg, Hiobiarilanto, Strauss, Glos, and Vences, 2011, J. Nat. Hist., London, 45: 2871–2900, described larval morphology (as Gephyromantis sculpturatus). Rodriguez, Börner, Pabijan, Gehara, Haddad, and Vences, 2015, Evol. Ecol., 29: 765–785 (and supplemental data), reported (as Gephyromantis sculpturatus) on phylogeographic diversity and its causes. Vences, Köhler, Andreone, Craul, Crottini, Du Preez, Preick, Rancilhac, Rödel, Scherz, Streicher, Hofreiter, and Glaw, 2021, Spixiana, München, 44: 175–202, provided a molecular analysis that showed that the name Gephyromantis plicifer actually not to populations formerly associated with the name, but with a candidate species formerly referred to as Gephyromantis sp. Ca21, and that Gephyromantis sculpturatus is a synonym. Their data also required that Gephyromantis pedronoi be recognized for populations in southeastern Madagascar formerly associated with this species.
