Leptodactylus spixi Heyer, 1983, Proc. Biol. Soc. Washington, 96: 270. Holotype: USNM 96409, by original designation. Type locality: "Brazil: Rio de Janeiro; Saco de São Francisco, Niteroi".

Distribution

Atlantic forests in the Brazilian states of Bahia, Espírito Santo, and Rio de Janeiro.

This is the same species that Heyer, 1978, Sci. Bull. Nat. Hist. Mus. Los Angeles Co., 29: 64, discussed as Leptodactylus mystaceus; see Heyer, 1983, Proc. Biol. Soc. Washington, 96: 270-272, and Hoogmoed and Gruber, 1983, Spixiana, München, Suppl., 9: 357-358, for discussion of nomenclatural problems. Izecksohn and Carvalho-e-Silva, 2001, Anf. Municipio Rio de Janeiro: 78, provided a brief account and photo. Bilate, Wogel, Weber, and Abrunhosa, 2006, Arq. Mus. Nac., Rio de Janeiro, 64: 235–245, reported on the advertisement call and larval morphology. In the Leptodactylus fuscus species group, Leptodactylus mystaceus complex, of de Sá, Grant, Camargo, Heyer, Ponssa, and Stanley, 2014, S. Am. J. Herpetol., 9(Spec. Issue 1): 1–123, who provided a summary of the relevant literature (adult and larval morphology, identification, advertisement call, and range) of this species on pp. 46. L. Mascimento in Ferreira, Mônico, Silva, Lirio, Zocca, Mageski, Tonini, Beard, Duca, and Silva-Soares, 2019, ZooKeys, 857: 152, noted an unnamed species, "Leptodactylus aff. spixi" in the region of Santa Teresa, Espírito Santo, Brazil.
