Hyperolius olivaceus Buchholz and Peters in Peters, 1876, Monatsber. Preuss. Akad. Wiss. Berlin, 1876: 120. Syntypes: ZMB 8829 (3 specimens) according to Bauer, Günther, and Klipfel, 1995, in Bauer et al. (eds.), Herpetol. Contr. W.C.H. Peters: 44; now renumbered ZMB 8829 and ZMB 53264–53265 (formerly part of ZMB 8829) according to Tillack, de Ruiter, and Rödel, 2021, Zoosyst. Evol., Berlin, 97: 431. Type locality: "Limbareni am Ogowe" = Lambaréné on the river Ogooué (or Ogowe), Moyen-Ogooué Province, Gabon.

Afr., 64: 79; now numbered ZMB 8830 and ZMB 65178 (formerly part of ZMB 8830) according to Tillack, de Ruiter, and Rödel, 2021, Zoosyst. Evol., Berlin, 97: 421. Type locality: "Limbareni am Ogowe" = Lambarene, Moyen-Ogooué Province, Gabon. Synonymy with Hyperolius cinnamomeoventris olivaceus suggested by Laurent, 1961, Rev. Zool. Bot. Afr., 64: 79, and confirmed by Lötters, Gossmann, Obame, and Böhme, 2001, Herpetofauna, Weinstadt, 23: 29.

Resurrected from the synonymy of Hyperolius cinnamomeoventris by Schick, Kielgast, Rödder, Muchai, Burger, and Lötters, 2010, Zootaxa, 2501: 33, but subsequently treated as a subspecies of Hyperolius cinnamomeoventris by Bell, Parra, Badjedjea, Barej, Blackburn, Burger, Channing, Dehling, Greenbaum, Gvoždík, Kielgast, Kasumba, Lötters, McLaughlin, Nagy, Rödel, Portik, Stuart, VanDerWal, Zassi-Boulou, and Zamudio, 2017, Mol. Ecol., 26: 5223–5244, who also discussed biogeography. Previously considered a junior synonym of Hyperolius fuscigula by Boulenger, 1882, Cat. Batr. Sal. Coll. Brit. Mus., Ed. 2: 124.
