Comment

Faivovich, Haddad, Garcia, Frost, Campbell, and Wheeler, 2005, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 294: 84, resurrected Hyloscirtus from the synonymy of Hyla (where it was placed by Duellman, 1970, Monogr. Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kansas: 327), for all species formerly placed in the Hyla armata group, Hyla bogotensis group, and Hyla larinopygion group (which Faivovich, Haddad, Garcia, Frost, Campbell, and Wheeler, 2005, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 294: 84, continued to recognize within Hyloscirtus pending evaluation of their status). In Cophomantini of Faivovich, Haddad, Garcia, Frost, Campbell, and Wheeler, 2005, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 294: 75. Duellman, 1972, Occas. Pap. Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kansas, 11: 1–31, revised the Hyla bogotensis group. Duellman and Hillis, 1990, Occas. Pap. Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kansas, 134: 1–23, reviewed the systematics of the Hyla larinopygion group. Duellman and Coloma, 1993, Occas. Pap. Mus. Nat. Hist. Univ. Kansas, 161: 1–11, supplied a key to the Hyla larinopygion group of Ecuador. Kizirian, Coloma, and Paredes-Recalde, 2003, Herpetologica, 59: 348, noted that the Hyla larinopygion group cannot be diagnosed as monophyletic without including Hyla armata. Duellman, De la Riva, and Wild, 1997, Sci. Pap. Nat. Hist. Mus. Univ. Kansas, 3: 1–41, provided some relevant discussion of the Andean groups. Faivovich and De la Riva, 2006, Copeia, 2006: 785–791, suggested that the Hyloscirtus armatus group might render paraphyletic the Hyloscirtus bogotensis group. Sánchez, 2010, Copeia, 2010: 351–363, delimited two species groups based on larval morphology. Coloma, Carvajal-Endara, Dueñas, Paredes-Recalde, Morales-Mite, Almeida-Reinoso, Tapia, Hutter, Toral-Contreras, and Guayasamin, 2012, Zootaxa, 3364: 1–78, reviewed the Hyloscirtus larinopygion group. Rivera-Correa and Faivovich, 2013, Herpetologica, 69 : 298–313, redelimited and rediagnosed the Hyloscirtus larinopygion group.  Almendáriz C., Brito-M., Batallas-Revelo, and Ron, 2014, Pap. Avulsos Zool., São Paulo, 54: 33–49, reported on molecular phylogenetics of the genus. Guayasamin, Rivera-Correa, Arteaga-Navarro, Culebras, Bustamante, Pyron, Peñafiel, Morochz, and Hutter, 2015, Neotropical Biodiversity, 1: 2–21, reported on a maximum-likeihood analysis of static-aligned molecular data. Rivera-Correa, García-Burneo, and Grant, 2016, Zootaxa, 4061: 29–40, commented on the state of phylogenetic inquiry in the genus. Ron, Caminer, Varela-Jaramillo, and Almeida-Reinoso, 2018, ZooKeys, 809: 97–105, discussed the molecular phylogenetics and biogeography of the species within the genus. Dubois, Ohler, and Pyron, 2021, Megataxa, 5: 439, recognized Colomascirtus as the sister taxon of Hyloscirtus, but because they did not include Hyloscirtus jahni in their analysis (the species that rendered Hyloscirtus paraphyletic with respect to Colomascirtus according to  Rojas-Runjaic, Infante-Rivero, Salerno, and Meza-Joya, 2018, Zootaxa, 4382: 121, the proposition of Hyloscirtus monophyly was not adequately tested. Yánez-Muñoz, Reyes-Puig, Batallas-Revelo, Broaddus, Urgilés-Merchán, Cisneros-Heredia, and Guayasamin, 2021, PeerJ, 9 (e11914): 1–33, provided a 16S mtDNA tree for the Hyloscirtus bogotensis group. Reyes-Puig, Recalde, Recalde, Koch, Guayasamin, Cisneros-Heredia, Jost, and Yánez-Muñoz, 2022, PeerJ, 10 (e14066): 1–34, provided dot maps of the species of Ecuador and Colombia as well as a 16S mtDNA tree of the Hyloscirtus larinopygion group of species.
