Nannophrys guentheri Boulenger, 1882, Cat. Batr. Sal. Coll. Brit. Mus., Ed. 2: 115. Syntypes: BMNH (2 specimens), by original designation including animal figured on pl. 12, fig. 4 in the original publication; BMNH 1947.2.5.20–21 (formerly 1871.12.14.47) by museum records. Type locality: "Ceylon" (= Sri Lanka). Given as "Labugama", Sri Lanka, by Karunarathna, 1986, Loris, 17: 140–142; this rejected by Bopage, Wewelwala, Krvavac, Jovanovic, Safarek, and Pushpamal, 2011, Salamandra, 47: 175.

Known only from the imprecise type locality of "Ceylon" (Sri Lanka) (see comment).

The Sri Lankan record of Kirtisinghe, 1957, Amph. Ceylon: 50–51, is based on juvenile Nannophrys ceylonensis, according to Clarke, 1983, Zool. J. Linn. Soc., 79: 377–398. See account by Dutta and Manamendra-Arachchi, 1996, Amph. Fauna Sri Lanka: 107–107. Known only from the poorly preserved types, which may not be distinct from from Nannophrys ceylonensis, or may represent an extremely local or extinct species. Dutta, 1997, Amph. India Sri Lanka: 143, provided range, systematic comments, and partial taxonomic bibliography. See map, description of geographic range and habitat, and conservation status in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 138, who regarded the species as extinct. Bopage, Wewelwala, Krvavac, Jovanovic, Safarek, and Pushpamal, 2011, Salamandra, 47: 175, suggested that a record by Karunarathna, 1986, Loris, 17: 140–142, from the Kanneliya Forest of southwestern Sri Lanka is based on a misidentification. Regarded as extinct by Batuwita, Udugampala, De Silva, Diao, and Edirisinghe, 2019, J. Anim. Diversity, 1: 48, and Jayawardena, Senevirathne, Wijayathilaka, Ukuwela, Manamendra-Arachchi, and Meegaskumbura, 2017, Ceylon J. Sci., 46 (Special issue): 48.
