Closely related to Colostethus dunni according to the original publication, although this is inconsistent with the results of Grant, Frost, Caldwell, Gagliardo, Haddad, Kok, Means, Noonan, Schargel, and Wheeler, 2006, Bull. Am. Mus. Nat. Hist., 299. Murphy, 1997, Amph. Rept. Trinidad Tobago: 62, provided a brief account. See photograph, map, description of geographic range and habitat, and conservation status in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 233. Lehtinen and Hailey, 2008, Caribb. J. Sci., 44: 260–264, described the tadpole. Manzanilla, La Marca, and García-París, 2009, Biol. J. Linn. Soc., 97: 185–199, corroborated the status of this species and suggested it to be most closely related to Mannophryne riveroiSánchez, 2013, Zootaxa, 3637: 569–591, provided information on larval morphology.
