Type locality: "COLOMBIA, Departamento de ANTIOQUIA, Muncipio de Urrao, carretera Urrao—Caicedo, vereda El Chuscal, Quebrada "La Nevera", 2680 m.s.n.m.".

Known only from three localities (2030–2680 m elevation) in the northern part of the Cordillera Occidental of Antioquia Department, Colombia.

In the Eleutherodactylus taeniatus complex according to the original publication. In the Pristimantis (Pristimantis) frater species group of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 121. Not assignable to a species group according to Padial, Grant, and Frost, 2014, Zootaxa, 3825: 128.
