In the Eleutherodactylus (Eleutherodactylus) conspicillatus series, Eleutherodactylus orestes group according to Lynch and Duellman, 1997, Univ. Kansas Mus. Nat. Hist. Spec. Publ., 23: 229. Almendáriz C. and Orcés, 2004, Rev. Politécnica, Quito, 25: 126-127, provided distributional data for Ecuador. In the Pristimantis (Pristimantis) orestes species group of Hedges, Duellman, and Heinicke, 2008, Zootaxa, 1737: 125. Not assignable to a species group according to Padial, Grant, and Frost, 2014, Zootaxa, 3825: 127. See map, description of geographic range and habitat, and conservation status (as Eleutherodactylus orestes) in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 362. Urgilés, Székely, Székely, Christodoulides, Sánchez-Nivicela, and Savage, 2019, ZooKeys, 864: 111–146, revised the species, recognizing Pristimantis cajanuma, from within the previous concept, and provided an account and restricted distribution (pp. 121–126), excluding records from Susudel (Azuay, Ecuador) and Saraguro (Loja, Ecuador) as unconfirmed.
