Bufo augusticeps amatolica Hewitt, 1925, Rec. Albany Mus., 3: 360. (Incorrect subsequent spelling of the species name.) Syntypes: 13 specimens, including AMG 4044, 4922, and one in the KM according to  Poynton, 1964, Ann. Natal Mus., 17: 44; AMG specimens now in PEM. PEM A833 (formerly AMG 4044) designated lectotype by Conradie, Branch, and Watson, 2015, Zootaxa, 3936: 53. Type locality: "Amatola Range, near Hogsback, . . . . on the summit of the range at about 5,500 feet", Eastern Cape Province, Rep. South Africa.
