Known only from the type locality in the upper Marañón area, Cajamarca, northern Peru.

Considered a subspecies of Rhinella limensis (as Bufo limensis) by Leviton and Duellman, 1978; see comment under Rhinella limensisVera Candioti, Grosso, Pereyra, Haad, Lescano, Siu-Ting, Aguilar, and Baldo, 2020, Herpetol.
