Incilius macrocristatus (Firschein and Smith, 1957)

Class: Amphibia > Order: Anura > Family: Bufonidae > Genus: Incilius > Species: Incilius macrocristatus

Bufo valliceps macrocristatus Firschein and Smith, 1957, Herpetologica, 13: 219. Holotype: UIMNH 35583, by original designation. Type locality: "between La Gloria and Cerro Azul", Oaxaca, Mexico. Type locality discussed by Mendelson, 1997, Herpetologica, 53: 26, who noted that field notes of the original collector reported the locality as ". . . Cerro Atravesado in view to SE and Cerro Azul to E or slightly S of E ..." and noted associated species that indicate cloud forest habitat.

Bufo macrocristatusTihen, 1962, Am. Midl. Nat., 62: 168 (without discussion); Mendelson, 1997, Herpetologica, 53: 22.

Comment

See account by Mendelson, 1997, Herpetologica, 53: 22, who noted the species is most similar to Incilius cavifrons and previously frequently confused with it and who noted that the tadpole descibed by Korky and Webb, 1973, J. Herpetol., 7: 47–49, as Bufo cavifrons is actually of this species. See photograph, map, description of geographic range and habitat, and conservation status (as Bufo macrocristatus) in Stuart, Hoffmann, Chanson, Cox, Berridge, Ramani, and Young, 2008, Threatened Amph. World: 188. Mendelson, Mulcahy, Williams, and Sites, 2011, Zootaxa, 3138: 1-34, suggested that this species is a member of a monophyletic Incilius valliceps group and in a subgroup they referred to as the Forest Group (the name Incilius cristatus subgroup is available—DRF) that includes Incilius aucoinae, Incilius cavifrons, Incilius campbelli, Incilius cristatus, Incilius leucomoyos, Incilius macrocristatus, Incilius melanochlorus, Incilius spiculatus, and Incilius tutelariusOliver-López, Woolrich-Piña, and Lemos-Espinal, 2009, Fam. Bufonidae Mex.: 76–78, provided an account for Mexico (as Ollotis macrocristata). Köhler, 2011, Amph. Cent. Am.: 104–115, compared this species to others in Central America and provided a range map and photograph.
